Digital Smile Design and Emotional Dentistry

By Doctor Eduardo De la TorreDr Eduardo De la Torre

Let me start this article by saying that Digital Smile Design has changed the  way I practice dentistry.Since I started working following DSD protocols, not only have I renewed and re-enforced my passion for our profession, but it has also increased exponentially the amount of cases we preform in our clinic, without mentioning the doors it has open for me to be able to share my work and share this knowledge through courses and lectures.

DSD is simply a more predictable way to approach our cases with a simple 8 steps design that enables us to create facially driven smile designs. It also  facilitates online team asynchronous communication which makes the interdisciplinary treatment plan much more accessible and easy to actually practice, using every day apps such as WhatsApp and Dropbox.

In the design process we bring the face to the working model, this facially driven smile design ensures amazing results that makes our work so much more satisfactory and free of those unpleasant final restorations we have all received from the lab ,excited to finally see in place and thenboom!!! disaster the veneers looked good in the model but brought to the face something is wrong, unbalanced, tilted it just looks weird!

We need to do a simple photo and video protocol that gives us the face of our patients to work with, it also gives us a dynamic documentation of our case. With the aid of the new softwares by Nemo DSD it makes it very easy to start applying this technology to our daily routine and the transformation of your practice will be amazing. These softwares will bring the most advanced technology in diagnosis, planning and execution of DSD, which will ultimately mean brining more confidence and safety to our patients. We can also achieve our DSD’s with the use of free softwares such as Keynote or Powerpoint.

This digital design will then be transferred to the model and ultimately to a wax up that will enable the mock-up, if analogue or old school is the way we wish to pursue ( which is perfectly valid and I still do for many cases). But, nowadays  I am personally drifting towards the full digital ride , getting my models from DSD Virtual lab, done by 3D printing of models created from facially guided digital 3D wax-up with natural morphology (digital SKYN) previous 3D scanning of the mouth, that can also be transferred into Cad-Cam systems such as Cerec to mill our final restorations.

I consider that the most precious time of a dentist is the chair side time working on the patient's mouth. Everything we can do outside of it to save time in the mouth is worth doing, so I always wanted to plan my work so it  would generate as little as possible adjustments in all meanings in the mouth and achieve the final result that patients want with as little stress as possible. The digital workflow can definitely help us with this goal!

But don’t forget that:

digital technology will help a lot the ones that already practice good dentistry but will not save the ones that still practice bad dentistry.

Then comes the mock-up session , here we are able to sell the dream before presenting the plan. But before we do the new smile test drive we can also show our patients other previous cases or what we like to call in the DSD team, Emotional Smile Design communication. This can be achieved with simple artistic portraits chair side, studio portraits or if you are willing to push it a bit further and love making videos, with the use of what I call Emotional Videossuch as DSD Roxanne or DSD Isabel ( that will be launched with this magazine) that I have done together with my team here at Madrid. This permits a subtle and efficient approach to our patients that increases the value of dentistry and their acceptance of treatment plans and the costs of these.

The mock up is the key that opens the kingdom of emotional dentistry, making our patients start sobbing ,free flowing tears that have nothing to do with anger, pain or sadness but with pure joy and happiness when they see themselves smiling with no complex or fear. The motivational power this amazing tool gives us as professionals is unbelievable when it comes to case acceptance.More importantly for me , the feeling of satisfaction of a job well done ,I have when I come back home after a day of hard work , is priceless.

The influence that we can have in our patients life when we give them back the power to express their emotions through a beautiful smile is really something that amazes me more and more every day listening to their stories. I wanted to share with all of you, my colleagues and friends ,a Mock Up session done in my clinic Q dental that was specially emotional and really unexpected. It amazed us all here , I hope you will also be shocked . Moreover I am sure that it will explain much better than my words the true power of Digital Smile Design and Emotional Dentistry: Gabriel´s Mock Up session.
